What Is Remote Online Notarization?

Notarization without being in the same room? Here is how it works and how identity is still verified.

Florida Remote Online Notarization, commonly called RON, allows an authorized Florida online notary and a signer to meet through secure, real-time audio-video technology.

But convenience doesn't eliminate identity verification. Depending on the legally compliant identity-proofing method used, the process may include:

  • Government-issued identification
  • Credential analysis to evaluate the ID
  • Identity proofing, such as Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA)
  • Live two-way audio-video communication
  • Electronic signatures and a notarial certificate
  • Secure electronic records and session recording

What is KBA?

Knowledge-Based Authentication uses questions generated from public or proprietary data associated with the signer. Under Florida's statutory minimum KBA standards, the signer is presented with at least 5 questions, must answer at least 80% correctly and has a 2-minute time limit.

The result?

Convenience + Identity Verification + Document Security

RON can be especially helpful for busy professionals, traveling clients and people who need documents notarized without coordinating an in-person appointment.
